How to pick a drain cover of gully grid

Lakeland Steel (Laser Factory Ltd) manufacture a range of gully covers for a variety of uses and can also produce covers to any custom size required.
Our gully grids are made from 4 main materials and fall in to categories of round, square and rectangular shapes, although we are not limited to this.

What material drain cover should you pick?

1) Corten Steel
This material is a weathering steel, so it will form a protective oxide layer which prevents the steel inside the layer from corroding away. These gully grids will, therefore, last a long time and go from an orange/brown colour initially to a deep brown colour over the first year or two. We can offer these painted, but in high traffic areas this paint is likely to wear away so is only suggested for out of the way locations such as the edges of pavements or under down pipes.

2) Stainless Steel
Our Stainless steel drain covers are produced from 304 and 316 Marine grade plates and are cut directly without the need for any secondary welding or weak points. This material will also resist corrosion and last an extremely long time. Supplied with a brushed finish and smoothed edges for safe handling.

3) Mild steel
Our Mild steel drain covers are cut from Structural steel plate of both S275 and S355 standards depending on the drain cover size. These are painted with Black Hammerite paint to offer protection from corrosion, however, this will wear down in trafficked areas by pedestrians and vehicles so we suggest picking a Corten or stainless grate for these locations.
Uses:
Out of the way
4) Swirl Guards
Our stainless steel SWIRL guards are not structural, these are designed to be placed over existing drain cover grates in order to help protect against leaves and gravel from entering the drain. The SWIRL pattern works well with most types of drain cover.
Uses:
Over existing covers
(*) We are currently testing our drain covers and will update listings as we go, please ensure you order a grid that is rated to BS EN 124 "A" (15 kN test load)rating for pedestrian use. If a grids rating is missing please contact us for clarification before ordering and we can advise which grid to order.
(**) We are currently testing our drain covers and will update listings as we go, please ensure you order a grid that is rated to BS EN 124 "B" (125 kN test load) rating for vehicle use even if it is occasional. If a grids rating is missing please contact us for clarification before ordering and we can advise which grid to order.
